An IPTV subscription gives you channels; a player app is what you watch them in. Your choice of player decides how the guide looks, how fast channels change, whether catch-up is one click or five, and whether the remote feels like a TV remote. This guide covers the players Canadians use most, by device, with the settings worth changing on day one.
What a good player should do
- Log in with Xtream Codes details (server URL, username, password) as well as an M3U link.
- Show a full EPG grid with your time zone, not the server’s.
- Support catch-up so a show from earlier in the week is one click away.
- Offer favourites and channel groups, because 21,000 channels is a library, not a list.
- Let you switch between hardware and software decoding for stubborn streams.
- Remember multiple profiles or playlists for households with more than one subscription or language preference.
Amazon Fire TV Stick
The Fire TV Stick is the most common IPTV device in Canada because it’s cheap, it’s on sale every few weeks and it plugs into any TV. TiviMate is the favourite here: a fast guide, excellent catch-up and a premium tier for recording and multiple playlists. IPTV Smarters is the free alternative with a simpler layout. Both install from the Amazon Appstore or by sideloading the APK from the developer’s site with the Downloader app.
Android TV and Google TV
Sony, TCL, Hisense and Philips TVs, Chromecast with Google TV and the NVIDIA Shield all run Android TV, which has the widest choice. TiviMate and OTT Navigator lead; OTT Navigator has the most powerful guide customisation if you like to tinker. Both are in the Play Store.
Apple TV
Apple TV has fewer players but the ones that exist are polished. iPlayTV is a one-time purchase with a clean guide and good catch-up. IPTV Smarters is free. Both let you type login details on your iPhone rather than the Siri remote.
Samsung and LG Smart TVs
Built-in TV app stores are more limited, but IPTV Smarters, Smart IPTV and ibo Player are available on recent Tizen and webOS sets. Some of these use a MAC-address activation where you upload your playlist at the developer’s website; the setup guide walks through it. If your TV is more than five or six years old, a Fire TV Stick in the HDMI port is usually the better experience.
iPhone, iPad and Android phones
IPTV Smarters and GSE Smart IPTV on iOS, and TiviMate or IPTV Smarters on Android, all handle live TV and catch-up well for the commute or the cottage. Turn on hardware decoding to save battery during a three-hour game.
Windows and Mac
VLC will play an M3U link in a pinch, but it has no guide or catch-up. For regular viewing on a computer, a dedicated desktop player with Xtream Codes login is a much better experience.
Settings worth changing on day one
- Time zone. Set the EPG offset to your province so game times match the guide.
- Favourites. Build one group with the twenty channels you actually watch. The rest is there when you need it.
- Decoder. Start with hardware decoding. If one channel stutters, switch that channel to software.
- Buffer. Most players default to a small buffer. Increasing it slightly smooths out Wi-Fi hiccups at the cost of a second of delay.
- Parental PIN. Lock adult groups if children use the same device.
Red flags
A player app that comes pre-loaded with channels, asks for payment to “unlock” a lineup, or won’t tell you who makes it, is not a player; it’s a reseller in disguise. A legitimate player is empty when you install it and asks for your own subscription details. Stick to apps from the official store or the developer’s own website.
Whichever you pick, Voyage works with all of them. Pick a plan or run a free trial and test two players side by side.
